I got on MySpace

I'm probably the oldest human being on MySpace, but a friend suggested that it would be a better way to communicate with my family than this blog. I'm not sure how to manage it - but they said it's very good for posting pictures and it's in real time - I guess that's an advantage. I don't want to lurk or be beset with my students, so I may very well exit from it if it isn't the thing for me. Any suggestions?

Ugh. I HATE MySpace. I hate the look and layout -- so many ads, it's hard to tell what's my content and what's advertising. If you're going to be on one of those friend sites, I definitely prefer Facebook. But if you're worried about being beset by students, then either would probably not be a good idea. I think the focus of each is different, too. If all you want is a blog, then I would stick to a blog. The friend sites are more designed to communicate with friends (fake or otherwise), and they add blogging capabilities to increase content. There are a lot of spammers on MySpace, too. The majority of friend requests I get these days are from local bands who want to have lots of "friends" to increase their exposure, or from spammers who, by the time I get around to checking my friend requests, have been kicked off MySpace by the administrators. I guess if you're unsure, try it for a little while, but I don't think you're going to like it.

How is MySpace in "real time" and a blog not?

Yeah, probably - and to tell you the truth, I don't really know how MySpace is "real time" - I'll probably end up not using it.

Better has been signing up with Yahoo with a couple of groups - especially AP teachers, who share some great ideas!

I hate the look of MySpace too. I can't even figure out what I'm looking at. I honestly don't understand how people use it-- it looks, to me, like it was designed by middle-schoolers with no concept of how to use blank space anywhere.

End of rant. I like blogs way better!

IF you want a free website, geocities.com or angelfire.com are very friendly. I don't like myspace either. Blogs do it for me and I think they are in "real time". Love your blog, btw :)
